Port of Key West

Key West is a rare U.S. domestic cruise port in some Caribbean itineraries. It may not exist as a stop for much longer, as it’s generally unpopular with the locals who continue efforts to shut down cruise ships from docking at Port of Key West in Florida. For cruisers who are fortunate to enjoy this stop still while it is an option, though, there are many fantastic things to do at the Key West cruise port.

Many cruise ports offer great beach day opportunities. While that’s certainly an option here, this is one where I recommend cruisers enjoy the great history and cultural experiences that the port has to offer. Here are my recommendations for the top things to do in Key West, all of which can be booked independently:

  • Most of the major Key West sites are walkable from the port, but for those who prefer a more leisurely option or have mobility limitations, golf cart rentals are a popular choice.
  • Another good option to get around (and not have to deal with parking) is a Hop-on Hop-off Trolley Tour or the Conch Tour Train.
  • If you’re cool with walking but want to learn along the way, try an affordable Historical Walking Tour or partake in an even more cost-effective self-guided audio tour
  • Cruisers can walk the exterior of the Harry S Truman Little White House and enjoy the grounds at no cost (and pop into the gift shop, which includes a small free exhibit), or buy admission for the full experience.
  • If you’re into Ernest Hemingway, or you’re like me and into the 61 cats (many polydactyls) who live there, the Hemingway House is a must-stop destination.
  • Walkable from the port (about 1.2 miles) is the Southernmost Point of the Continental U.S., and just around the corner from this tourist photo opp is the Key West Butterfly Conservatory.
  • Sample key lime pie: I taste-tested 8 of the best key lime pies in Key West, and Kermit’s was my favorite.
